Overview

Participants in our Precollege Summer Scholars program are selected through a competitive application process and placed into a course determined to be the best fit for their interests and academic readiness. Residential participants live in campus residence halls and participate in a single course specially designed by Dartmouth instructors. Residential life is overseen by a team of counselors.

In addition to the core course, residential participants will have the option to join co-curricular activities and workshops. Evenings and weekends will offer social and recreational activities in the residence hall, on the Dartmouth campus, and around the New England area.

Dartmouth Precollege Summer Scholars instructors are primarily Dartmouth affiliates — meaning faculty, staff, teaching faculty, lecturers and senior lecturers who teach undergraduate and graduate students during the academic year, as well as alumni, emeritus faculty and postdoctoral scholars — alongside other experienced instructors selected for their expertise in their field as well as their interest in teaching precollege students. Our instructors design custom courses that provide a deep dive into their area of expertise and reflect current academic research and scholarly trends.

Engaging Courses

Summer Scholars offers a wide range of courses that highlight academic areas represented at Dartmouth. While not for grades or credits, our courses are taught at the college level and are designed to challenge you, encouraging exploration into new areas of study.

Our courses emphasize hands-on, experiential learning and are designed to teach students how to apply what they are learning in the real world, from valuating companies or programming a robot to handling ancient documents or starting the next great American novel.
